Travel Tips
What to bring and wear
Throughout the year, it is advisable to wear summer clothing: light clothes, hats, sunglasses, and sun protection. Other products such as insect repellent and prescribed medicine is recommended as well.
Language
While the main language is Burmese, there are around 100 other dialects that are commonly spoken. As the country just opened its doors to other nations, the level of English amongst the locals is still not good.
Etiquette in public
It is recommended that you avoid kissing and hugging in public, pointing things with your feet.
Courtesies at Pagodas/Monasteries
It is important to follow rules while visiting sacred pagodas and monasteries such as
- Taking off shoes and socks
- Wear clothes that covers shoulders and knees
- Don’t take provocative pictures inside the pagoda
Water
Please don’t drink water from the tap as it is not purified like in other countries. It is recommended to drink water from bottled water, which can be bought it many different places.
Airport Departure Tax
There is a departure tax of 25 USD per person on international departures only. The airport tax for domestic flights is 3 USD per person.
Customs
Foreign currency exceeding 10,000 USD must be declared at your point of entry.
Duty free allowance: 2 bottles of liquor, 2 cartons of cigarettes, 50 cigars, and 250 ml of perfume.
