Location
Bordered to the north by Thailand and Laos, and east by Vietnam, Cambodia is a home of world heritages. It is located in Southeast Asia and occupies a total area of 181,035 square kilometers.
People
Cambodia is made out of 13.8 million people, where 90% of the residents are Khmer and the rest are Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, Tami, etc. The Chinese have a strong influence in Cambodia, especially in the business sector.
Dress
The people of Cambodia have two different types of traditional costumes, including daily costumes and festive costumes. The most common costume is called sampot, which is made from silk, combined with sophisticated knitting to create an exquisite piece of fabric. In tradition, Cambodian people wear a plaid scarf called Krama, which is made out of cotton or silk. This is worn to protect people from harmful sunlight as well as absorbing the sweat in the heat of summer days.
Art & Architecture
Cambodians are known for their arts, in the ancient forms of dance that can be divided into three main categories: classical dance for royal courts, folk dances that portray everyday life, and vernacular dances which are danced for social functions. On the other hand, architecture in Cambodia during the Khmer empire relates back to the dances, which can be seen in the temples that was built during that time. Also, the temples are adorned with guardian figures and other religious figures along its entry way. The patterns of mythical serpents or nagas are also an important feature as far as architecture in Cambodia.
Language and Religion
In Cambodia, Khmer is the official language and English is very popular with Khmer people for communicating with foreigners in administrative, commercial, and diplomatic affairs. A minority of the people speak Chinese as there is an influx of Chinese, especially on the business sides. In the Cambodian people, more than 95% of the population is Buddhist as there has been a long history of Buddhism in the country. Other than that, the rest are Muslims and animists.
